Better Than A Day Spa.

I've found something WAY better than a day spa.

Forget paying OODLES of money to have yourself pampered.

(sidenote: I think we're plenty pampered enough already.)

What if I told you I got to go somewhere today and kick my feet up for two hours in a comfy chair- reading, watching TV, being offered blankets and movies to watch, being brought whatever food or drinks my heart desired?

I felt like a queen!

Oh! And while I was doing that, I was also doing something else.

I was saving lives.

Yazooo!!!

I found out recently that I have a very rare blood type. I received a call on Friday from the Oklahoma Blood Institute, saying they needed my platelets because their supplies were low. There was a baby born prematurely in a local hospital with my blood type that needed donations.

Platelets only have a shelf life of 5 days, so they are constantly in need of donors.

I scheduled an appointment to go in today, and it was such a great experience!

I've never donated platelets before. Only whole blood. The platelet process takes two hours, which may be hard to squeeze into a daily schedule, but it is completely worth the effort. I went while the boys were at Mother's Day Out. And I would do it again in a heartbeat! (pun?)

If you have never given blood, or haven't done so in awhile, I encourage you to contact your local Blood Center and get your veins down there. Even if you feel afraid, or don't like needles, there is a point where you have to choose to not let your fear hold you back from compassion & generosity. From giving. Your momentary discomfort can restore a child to its parents... make strong someone who is weak... give hope to the desperate.

Better than a day spa.

Incomparably so.

Grab a friend and go down together- maybe in lieu of that pedicure or manicure you had planned... You won't regret it.

What a joy it is!

:)

Yes! I love giving blood! And yes, they do treat you very well. I wholeheartedly agree! (ahhhh, not punny.)

Wow. You are a better woman than I am. I have a severe needle phobia, and I praise God every time I even think of people giving blood that I am a universal receiver, so anyone with my blood type doesn't really need MY blood, because they can take anyone's.

That said, I love that people do have the generosity to give blood, and I think it's a wonderful gift.

:( i used to donate but i become anemic easily and at one point i was grey and couldn't pick my head up off my pillow i was so weak, i was "severely anemic" and "needed to get iron in me right away or i'd have to go in for a blood transfusion"
i guess you're supposed to get checked prior to donating--the woman who checked me let me donate even though i was already slightly anemic (i didn't know it at the time)
i used to love to donate blood though! it feels good to help and it just feels good--didn't you feel strong and almost healthier after?!
i miss that feeling! :)

My husband has a rare blood type and he gets calls regularly to donate in our area (he calls the the vampires..."Those vampires keep coming after me for my blood!"). No comfy chairs or books, but he usually scores some free icecream coupons out of the deal!
I've thought of doing it but didn't know if I can because of some meds I take. I guess I should find out, eh? I've never needed blood but when I think of how simple a need it is and how easy it is to give, I think it's something I should consider. Thanks for the reminder and blessings to you and your family, Emery!

I tried giving blood and/or plasma before... I thought it would help me get over my fear of needles. You know, by repeated exposure to them. But, alas, I passed out every time. I technically don't weigh enough to donate, but they weigh you with your clothes on, so I just wore a heavy sweatshirt and some clodhoppers, nyah nyah! Now the hubs won't let me do it anymore. But good for you!
